Security configuration in BullGuard 8.0

Features and Settings

Launch your BullGuard application, click the Main icon and select the Overview tab.

To update BullGuard, click on Check & Update.

Click Settings for more options.

General tab

Under the General tab, Check for updates automatically is ticked by default.

Below the Notification Level, you can select the level of notification you're given when BullGuard updates:

  • Level 1: Completely silent
  • Level 2: Quietly notify me, which is selected as the default
  • Level 3: Ask me before implementing an update
  • Level 4: Ask me before downloading an update

Product Updates

  • Yes, notify me when updates are available for my installed plugins is ticked
  • Yes, notify me when plugins are available is ticked

Advanced tab

Under the Advanced tab, the following settings are selected, as recommended:

  • Update location: update.bullguard.com
  • Check every: 8 Hours
  • Warn me if updates are: ticked and set to 5 days old

Account tab

This tab will allow you to change the current user and has a link to access your account. There is also a link to the Enter License-Key but you won't need this providing you've purchased BullGard with Greenbee Telecoms.

You'll also see the current status of the Antivirus, Firewall, Backup, Spamfilter and Antispyware aspects of the program.

Settings tab

Under the Settings tab, the following options are selected by default.

  • Load BullGuard at Windows startup is ticked
  • Minimize console at startup is ticked
  • Enable BullGuard News is ticked
  • Enable Communication Screen is ticked
  • Use proxy connection is NOT ticked

To reset to default settings click on Reset settings.

Protection tab 

Click on the Antivirus, Antispyware icon and select the Protection tab.

  • The on-access protection is enabled by default and your computer will be safeguarded from Malware.

The following options are selected by default.

  • Enable real time file monitoring is ticked
  • Enable incoming email monitoring is ticked
  • Enable outgoing email monitoring is ticked
  • Scan all files is selected
  • Scan all files (local and remote) is selected
  • Exclude files larger than in (KB) is ticked set to 5000 by default

Scan tab

The Scan tab displays the status of My Computer, My Documents, My Emails and Quick Scan.

  • To add or remove options, click the (+) Plus and (-) Minus signs
  • For results on scanning, click on View log
  • To setup scheduling on scanning, click on Schedule
  • To Scan your System, click Scan now

Quarantine tab

  • All Viruses, infected or suspected files are placed in the Quarantine section.

You can Submit these files to BullGuard for further analysis. Alternatively you can Delete and Move Back the quarantined files.

Click on the Firewall icon and select the Overview tab.

  • Firewall protection is ON and your computer is safeguarded from Hackers and Trojans.

To switch between Beginner and Advanced choose between the User Interface Level.

Beginner User level

  • Displays Applications monitored by BullGuard.
  • Click on Rules to specify programs that you want to Allow or Block.
  • Click on Settings to enable/disable Automatic rules for known applications and Enable intrusion detection and various other options.

The Advanced User Level

  • Displays Applications monitored by BullGuard.
  • Click on Profiles to edit your firewall security profiles.
  • Click on Activity to monitor network activity.
  • Click on Logs to monitor your firewall activity logs: (General, Security, Traffic and Packet Logs)

Click on the Spamfilter icon and select the Overview tab.

  • Spamfilter is ON by default.

Choose e-mail client to configure is set to Microsoft Outlook, select the drop down to choose another client.

  • Automatically whitelist addresses I write to is ticked
  • Automatically whitelist cc's of trusted senders is ticked

BullGuard 8 Settings -10

Click on the Whitelist tab

  • Click on the plus (+) signs to add an address to the Whitelist, addresses in the Whitelist will NOT be marked as spam. Domains can be used in the same way you would add an address to the list.
  • Clicking on the minus (-) signs will remove any addresses or domains you've listed.

The Blacklist works in the opposite principle as of the Whitelist. The difference is that all addresses or domains added will be marked as spam instead.

BullGuard 8 Settings -11

Click on the Backup icon and select Backup.

Scheduled backups is turned ON by default.

  • Click on New Backup to start the Wizard. You'll be guided through the required steps to backup the contents of either email or folders on your Computer.

Click on Restore

  • By clicking the Start Restore Wizard button you can recover data from any of your backups.
