How to use Choose to Refuse

Choose to Refuse

Choose to Refuse prevents unwanted or nuisance calls getting through to you.

How does it work?

If you frequently receive unwanted or nuisance calls from a particular number, you can block that number from getting through to you. This ensures your peace of mind and, if later on you change your mind, you can lift the block and allow the caller to contact you again. It allows you to block up to 10 telephone numbers.

The service will bar any number where the phone number is available to the network. This includes other networks, mobiles and payphones. Most international calls cannot be barred as the full phone number is not forwarded. Calls from numbers where the phone number has been withheld can still be barred providing the phone number is available in the network.

Instructions for use

A touch-tone telephone is required to operate the service.

To bar the last number that called

  • Dial 14258
  • Choose to Refuse will ask you to press ** (2 x star button) to confirm your requirements
  • The number that has been barred will then be unable to call

To bar other numbers

  • Dial 14258 followed by your PIN (default PIN is 1234)

Choose to Refuse will offer the facility to:

  • Add a number to your list
  • Review your barred number list
  • Change your PIN

Up to 10 telephone numbers can be stored within a personal data store, the eleventh entry will cause the oldest telephone number saved to drop out of the list. The other numbers will then drop down, adding the new entry to the top of the data store.

An announcement will inform you when the data store is full. For security purposes a PIN (default 1234) is allocated to enable access to the data store. Announcements will guide you to review and edit the numbers held within your store. You can also add to your data stores by inputting specific telephone numbers manually by typing: 14258 followed by the phone Number and #.

How to change your PIN?

For data security, we will furnish you with the default PIN (1234). We advise you to change this when first using the service. If the PIN is then forgotten a reset to default will be required. Without the PIN, you will be unable to access your data store but will still be able to bar incoming calls using **.

To change the PIN:

  • Dial 14258
  • Choose the relevant option from the menu

Please contact us if you have forgotten your PIN

How does Choose to Refuse work?

Callers from numbers which have been barred using the service will receive a network announcement which advises: "The person you are calling is not accepting calls from you". They will not be charged for the call.

How long can numbers be stored?

You are advised to delete entries in the data store when ceasing the service. An auto delete facility clears data stores which have not been accessed for a set period of time. This will run at weekly intervals to delete any list which has not been accessed during a 31 day period. Access is defined as any incoming call or user interrogation. You are advised that if the service is not accessed, possibly due to prolonged absence, your list and PIN will be deleted. However, the next access would set the service back up with an empty list and default PIN.
